Technische Universität Graz

Institut für Signalverarbeitung u. Sprachkommunikation (SPSC Laboratory)

The Signal Processing and Speech Communication Laboratory (SPSC Lab) has run for seven years (2002-2009) the Christian-Doppler Laboratory for Nonlinear Signal Processing at TU Graz in collaboration with the microelectronics industry, it is strongly connected to the COMET K1-centre (Competence Centres for Excellent Technologies) Vienna Telecommunications Research Centre FTW, and it has been active in two projects of the EU FP6 IST program: EUROPCOM on UltraWideBand Communications and SNOW on interfaces for nomadic workers in industrial environments. The lab has built up a broad knowledge base on signal processing methods for mixed-signal systems and circuits. Fundamental work has been done on adaptive identification of nonlinear mixed-signal systems, nonlinear multi-rate signal processing, digital calibration of data converters, advanced algorithms for ultra wideband communications and all-digital phase-locked loops, adaptive digital predistortion for nonlinear power amplifiers, and reconfigurable radio terminals. Other work of the lab addresses speech and audio communication, in particular automatic document creation and media mining using speech recognition, speaker identification, separation, and localization using microphone arrays, machine learning algorithms and sensor network applications. Since 2006 the SPSC Lab is partner in COAST - Competence Network for Advanced Speech Technologies. The competence network COAST is concerned with research and development in the field of speech recognition and speech interpretation with large lexicons for professional applications. further details please see the COAST website (www.coast.at). Since 2008 the SPSC Lab is active in FFG-COMET Project Advanced Audio Processing (AAP). The intention of the project is to join research activities in the field of advanced audio processing. The central goal is to strengthen and augment the cooperation between academia and economy. The link between computationally demanding algorithms for audio signal processing and the ability to develop real-time systems is sought after within many innovative application fields that are tackled by the industrial partners, like professional audio and communication technologies, automotive, and entertainment systems. The expected results can be implemented in systems for in-car-communications, dictation and teleconferencing, as well as professional headphones and loudspeakers, and casino gaming machines.
