Austrian ESA participation
Austria has contributed to the successful implementation of nearly all activities that constitute the foundation and backbone of today's European space programmes. After having been an Associated Member to the European Space Agency, ESA, Austria joined ESA as a full member in 1987. The Aeronautics and Space Agency serves as a focal point for the coordination of aerospace activities in Austria and is the Austrian link to international aerospace activities and other space agencies.
Austrian space activities are financed by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology.
Austria’s contributions to ESA amount to 57 M€ in 2019. About 90 % of the contributions are awarded to Austrian research institutions and companies in terms of contracts.
The ESA Mandatory programmes (General Activities, Space Science, Technology Development, Technology Transfer, Industrial Policy) share represents about 18 million € and the optional programmes share about 39 million €.
In 2019 the Austrian total space budget (including EUMETSAT, ESA Programmes and National Programmes) amounts to 75 million €.
