Successful networking >> three new COST success stories

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is an EU-funded programme that enables researchers to set up their interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond. Three current success stories under the leadership of researchers at Austrian institutions show how this can be achieved. The next deadline for submissions is 29 November 2018 and the Austria Promotion Agency FFG, as the National Contact Point, will again be offering information and advice. If you want to get to know COST, you can also do so at the COST Information Day on 6 November 2018, which takes place during the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Next to "Horizon 2020", the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, COST is a central component of the European Research Area. The programme promotes the networking, exchange and coordination of national research activities and the dissemination of research, innovation and technology results at European level. The latest success stories show what this means: Recently, the results of the last call for proposals were published, in which researchers working in Austria were able to raise funding for three actions.

An overview of the three successful Main Proposers:

  1. "Correlated Multimodal Imaging in Life Sciences (COMULIS)
Main Proposer: Andreas Walter, BioImaging Austria-CMI
    http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA17121
The network aims at fueling urgently needed collaborations in the field of correlated multimodal imaging (CMI), promoting and disseminating its benefits through showcase pipelines, and paving the way for its technological advancement and implementation as a versatile tool in biological and preclinical research. CMI combines two or more imaging modalities to gather information about the same specimen. It creates a composite view of the sample with multidimensional information about its macro-, meso- and microscopic structure, dynamics, function and chemical composition.

  2. "Implementing nature based solutions for creating a resourceful Circular City"
Main Proposer: Günter Langergraber, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna
    http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA17133
The COST Action "Circular City Re.Solution" aims to establish a network testing the following hypothesis: “A circular flow system that implements NBS for managing nutrients and resources within the urban biosphere will lead to a resilient, sustainable and healthy urban environment”.

  3. "European Topology Interdisciplinary Action"
Main Proposer: Luca Tubiana, University of Vienna
    http://www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/ca/CA17139
The COST Action "European Topology Interdisciplinary Action" aims at forming a multidisciplinary community of researchers to characterize the emergence and effects of topological properties in biological and soft materials. A better understanding of the interplay between a system’s topological state, its three-dimensional structure, and its overall characteristics will pave the way to an improved control of relevant natural molecules or human-made materials, with remarkable impact on fundamental science as well as high-tech applications.

Possibilities for COST Actions

The next possibility to submit a COST Action ends on 29 November 2018, but regardless of this deadline there is always the possibility to take part in ongoing COST Actions. As the National Contact Point, the FFG provides information on this (https://www.ffg.at/europa/cost/bereiche-at-offen) and also provides information and advice with regard to the submission deadline at the end of November, which ranges from general advice and proposal checks to webinars and information events.

Webinar >> September 27, 2018

The webinar "COST Antragstellung leicht gemacht" (in German language) will take place on 27 September 2018. In this 1.5-hour training course you will be informed about the rules for participation and the general conditions of a COST application. Furthermore, there are helpful tips for a successful participation in the COST programme. Networking with COST >> 6 November 2018

More information about COST will be given during the COST Information Day on 6 November 2018 (1:30 to 6:00 pm), which will take place at Tech Gate Vienna within the scope of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. COST President Sierd Cloetingh and COST Director Ronald de Bruin will present the focus of COST and Austrian COST participants will explain their experiences.
