FFG

For over 20 years, we have been shaping the future—and we’re far from done.

The FFG is driven by what people can achieve with their potential. Since its founding in 2004, the FFG has supported over 60,000 companies, universities, research institutions, and organizations through more than 65,000 funded projects. These efforts have sparked numerous innovations in science and research, paving the way for the future.

The FFG advises brilliant minds and creates financial leeway for innovation. It builds networks across borders, fostering not only the development of organizations but also the people behind them.

The FFG …

  • funds, advises, and connects innovative companies, universities, and research institutions.
  • evaluates and reviews innovation projects.
  • represents Austria in national and international committees.

Each year, the FFG disburses approximately 1 billion Euro in funding. Its experts provide around 14,000 consultations on national funding and over 6,500 on European R&D initiatives annually. The FFG is also active in 20 national and international networks.

Objectives and Mission

The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is the national funding agency for industrial research and development in Austria. All FFG activities aim to strengthen Austria as a research and innovation centre on the global market and thus help to ensure the long-term availability of high quality jobs and maintain the prosperity of one of the world"s wealthiest countries.

These goals reflect the statutory purpose of the FFG: "The purpose of the FFG is to promote research, technology, development and innovation for the benefit of Austria." (Sec. 3 of the FFG Act)

Legal basis

The FFG was founded on 1 September 2004 (pursuant to the FFG Act on establishing a research promotion agency, Federal Law Gazette I No. 73/2004). The FFG is wholly owned by the Republic of Austria, represented by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and the Federal Ministry for Labour and Economy (BMAW). As a provider of funding services, however, the FFG also works for other national and international institutions.
